Over the past 10 years, Michael Hutchison has tried to utilize online resources not only with his own students, but on a larger scale through various opportunities to share not only what he has developed for his classes, but resources, curriculum, and discussion about topics and trends in the area of social studies. While he certainly enjoys using technology as well as learning about new ideas in educational technology, he is always mindful that the technology is the means to an end... and that is that his students learn about American history, culture, and government.

Over the past decade, Michael has been fortunate to have been recognized by various organizations as well as his peers for his integration of technology and subject matter. In 1996 and 1997, he was named national first place winner in Rifkin and Associates "21st Century Teacher" competition for integration of computer and cable television technology in his social studies classes. In 1999, he was named Central US region winner in Technology and Learning magazine's "Teacher of the Year" contest. In 2002, he was selected as "Teacher of the Year" by the Indiana Computer Educators, and later that year was selected as "Outstanding Technology-Using Educator" by ISTE. Since that time, he has also been named the 2006 "Special Service" award winner by the Indiana Council for the Social Studies, as well as the 2007 "Distinguished Teacher" by ICSS.

Michael credits a great deal of his success to the hard work of his students and their ability to embrace technology and excel at using it to learn social studies. He also feels an obligation to "give back" to fellow teachers who might be interested in duplicating what he has done in the area of classroom technology, or helping them in any way he can. To that end, he currently moderates three listservs for social studies teachers: the TAPPED IN Social Studies forum list, another TI Social Studies list which originally was part of Classroom Connect, and a third TI list established for the Indiana Council for the Social Studies.

Michael also serves as a member of the board of directors for the Indiana Computer Educators, and as an ex-officio member of the Indiana Council for the Social Studies board (as a member of the pubications committee). He is also currently a candidate for regular ICSS Board membership.

Michael also serves as a faculty member for Connected University, guiding several classes for CU since 2000. His work (and his students' work) have been featured in several publications, including Cable in the Classroom magazine, Technology and Learning magazine, Technos online magazine, and the Well-Connected Educator. Since 2000, he has also hosted a regularly scheduled Social Studies forum in TAPPED IN, and has brought fellow teachers "guests" including Joy Hakim, author of "History: A Story of US," Ron Maxwell, screenwriter/producer of the films "Gettysburg", and "Gods and Generals", and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.

Michael has also been fortunate to have been asked to write curriculum for PBS, C-SPAN, Social Studies School Service, the Indiana Historical Society, and ISTE. Teachers around the world have viewed his lessons and utilized them with their students. Mor ethan anything, Michael is looking forward to what we will be doing tomorrow in educational technology.
