George Washington was commander in  chief  of  the Army. He soon retired and he prepared his farewell address. In the years after the American Revolution, he retired. Americans needed a new leader. George Washington was a clear choice. General George Washington did not like this idea. He did not even  want to be president. He would rather enjoy the peaceful life of his Mount Vernon, Virginia plantation. But the new nation that he had  helped to create needed him. He became president in 1789 until 1797. He return as general of the army in 1798. He later returned to Mt. Vernon where he died in 1799.
