Harry S. Truman’s Military Career
by Jacob and Justin
In 1917, Harry S. Truman began his career in the Missouri National Guard.  He trained at Camp Doniphan in Oklahoma and became a captain.  Then he took command of Battery D - the 129th field artillary.  The Rowdy Kansas City Irishmen of the battery were known for wearing out commanding officers.  Many predicted the new captain would not be able to get his men under control.  But Harry didn't fail.  He succeeded.  He took his men to France and fought in World War I.  He was very strict with his men, but they really liked Harry.  They served in several battles until Harry was dishcarged in 1919.  All in all, Harry was a very good soldier and an even better leader.  Everyone was proud of Harry S. Truman.
