Harry S. Truman’s
Early Careers/Occupations
by Elizabeth & Jessica
Harry S. Truman had many careers before his Presidency.  His began his career as a railroad time keeper and became a bank clerk too.  One thing that Harry did was become a farmer.  He planted lots of different crops and farmed for many years.  He was also a solider and became Captain of Battery D.  He made his men into real soldiers.  In 1920, he opened up a men’s clothing store with a friend he met while in the National Guard.  It was called The Truman Haberdashery.  But after two years, the business failed.  That made Harry sad, but he didn't give up and decided to try something different.

After his business failed, Harry then went into politics and became a judge in Jackson County.  That's when he became known as an honest politician.  In 1934, he was elected as a Senator from Missouri.  The other senators didn't like Truman, but the citizens really liked his ideas.  He even formed a committee that helped stop the government from spending.  That saved our country lots of money.  In 1944, Truman became the Vice President of the United States.  Then when President Roosevelt died, Truman became the President.  All in all, he had a lot of jobs with different responsibilities.  Harry worked very hard, and he was a great man!
