William Howard Taft (1857-1930)
To Alphonso & Louisa Maria (Torrey)
Taft, William Howard Taft was born in the Mount Auburn part of Cincinnati,
Ohio on September 15, 1857. He had five siblings, two half brothers
by his father's first marriage along with two brothers and a sister. Young
William was an obese child, his size changing with his
stress, but he never let his weight get in his way of his active life. Taft
took dance lessons twice a week in grade school. He studied at Woodward High School as his
parents pushed him to the fullest. Taft continued his education at
Yale University where he graduated second
in his class out of 132 students. Following graduation he went on
to Cincinnati Law School while working
part time as a courthouse reporter for the Cincinnati Commercial. Pushing
himself to "be all he could be" he passed his bar exams in May 1880.
Taft married Helen "Nellie" Herron at her parent's home in Cincinnati
on June 19,1886. She married Taft principally because of his respect
for her intellect , but also because she sincerely believed that he would
be president some day.
In 1889 the Taft's brought their first son into the world, Robert Alphonso
Taft, then added a daughter, Helen Herron
Taft, in 1891. Six years later,
in 1897, they had their third and final child, a boy, Charles Phelps Taft
II.
