As he ran for president in 1900 Theodore Roosevelt got shot in the chest. He said "Nothing will stand in my way until I give my speech." He was elected in 1901. He was president for 8 years. He was the first president to ride in a airplane. One of the memorable achievements of Roosevelt's first term was the Panama Canal. He was an engineer for the Panama Canal. As an engineer he helped build the Panama Canal as it is today. When he was a President he led the government to purchase land for national parks.
