Illinois   

  • Illinois is the 21st state in the USA, it became a state on December 3, 1818.
  • It's capital is Springfield, and the largest city is Chicago.
  • It has an area of 57,918 square miles, so Illinois is the 25th biggest state in the USA.
  • Illinois has a population of 21,419,293 (as of 2000).
  • Some major rivers in Illinois are: The Mississippi River, Ohio River, Illinois River, and The Wabash River.
  • Some major lakes are: Lake Michigan, and Rend Lake.
  • The highest point is Charles Mound - 1,235 feet above sea level (376m).
  • The states that border Illinois are: Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin; and the only body of water that borders it is Lake Michigan.
  • The origin name of Illinois came from the word Illini, a confederation of the Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Michigamea, Moingwena, Peoria and Tamaroa Indiana tribes.
  • Illinois is also know as the Prairie State.
  • The state flag was originally designed in 1913 by Lucy Derwent. The flag's design is based upon the state's seal, which was designed by Sharon Tyndale, Illinois' secretary of state, in 1868.
  • The state Flower is Illinois native (purple) Violet.
  • The state bird is the Cardinal.
  • The state wild animal is the White-tailed deer.

  • Illinois has an area of 40,411 square miles, so Kentucky is the 37th biggest state un the USA.
  • It has a population of 4,041,769 (as of 2000), Kentucky is the 25th most populated state in the US.
  • The major rivers in Kentucky are: Ohio River, Mississippi River, Cumberland River, Kentucky River, and Green river
  • It's major lakes are: Lake Cumberland, Kentucky Lake, and Lake Barkley.
  • The highest point in Kentucky is the Black Mountain - 4,145 feet above sea level (1,263m).
  • The states bordering Kentucky are: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
  • The origin of the name Kentucky is from Indian word "Ken-tah-ten", which means "land of tomorrow."
  • Kentucky is also know as the Bluegrass State.
  • Kentucky's official state flag was adopted in 1918, but that design was not finalized until 1928. The flag was changed again in 1962.
  • The state bird is the Cardinal.
  • The state wild animal is the gray squirrel.
  • The state horse is the Thoroughbred.
