HOT TOPIC: Grants and Funding
Volume 2, Issue 39 - June 18, 2006

"Summer is upon us and along with all the opportunities for vacations, rest and rejuvenation summer is a great time to survey the landscape of grant and funding opportunities for the coming year. It’s never too soon to begin the process of preparing to apply for funding. Many busy educators wait until it's late in the game and wind up submitting a second-rate proposal. Crafting a proposal – especially for a federal grant or a large private endowment - can easily take three to four months of intensive preparation. By beginning to identify your targets now for future grant programs, you can give yourself every chance of success in acquiring funding. And even if you don’t get a specific grant for which you apply, the work you do in submitting your proposal is a fabulous exercise in scrutinizing your program and putting all your ducks in a row for other grant opportunities..

When preparing a grant application, don’t go it alone. There are so many different pieces of information you need to coordinate and bring together to complete a successful application package, you’ll do yourself a big favor by identifying the people you will count on for help early. Contact them, bring them together to review your goals for the grant, and then move forward with a cohesive effort including deadlines for completing each piece of the application.

The first step, of course, is to find the funding sources you would like to pursue. Federal state, local, public and private, you’ll find there are hundreds to consider -what a luxury! This week’s issue of the D12 newsletter offers you a dozen of the very best online resources for educational grants and funding."
