Structures and Materials

The buildings were made of adobe, which is a building compound made of materials found in nature, such as mud, straw, cow manure and water.
The outside of the adobe walls were covered in plaster (stucco.)

At the missions, the red tiled roofs were made of fired clay.  They still use these tiles on the roofs around Ojai, as you can see in the picture on the left of a local residence.

There was a design used on the mission doors called the River of Life, taken from Revelation 22 in the Bible "And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb"
Ojai's Museum door on the right has the same pattern.

The buildings at the Ojai Unified School District have red tile roofs.
